Rekenrek
Instructions - Set One
- Set the "NUMBER OF RAILS" to "2".
- "Click" the beads to see that the rekenrek operates as it used to.
- Select "RANDOM" and "ZERO" in each of the two visible rails to see how these two buttons function.
- Type a whole number less than or equal to ten in either of the two visible text boxes (then press the "Enter" key or "click" outside of the text box) and observe what happens.
Instructions - Set Two
- Set the "NUMBER OF RAILS" to "1".
- Select "HIDE AMOUNT". Notice that the large number displaying the amount (in the rekenrek) disappears as does the amount shown in the corresponding text box.
- Type a whole number less than or equal to ten in the text box (EVEN THOUGH YOU CANNOT "SEE" THE NUMBER IN THE TEXT BOX), then press the "Enter" key or "click" outside of the text box and observe what happens. A teacher can enter a value without the student knowing what was entered so that the teacher can determine if a student can associate a whole number with the current rail being viewed.
- RANDOM" and "ZERO" operate as before. The only difference is that the amount is no longer displayed.
Instructions - Set Three
- Set the "NUMBER OF RAILS" to "1".
- Select "HIDE ALL". Notice that the large number displaying the amount (in the rekenrek) disappears as does the amount shown in the corresponding text box.
- Notice that the beads also disappear, but the "SUBITIZE" button now become "active".
- Select the "SUBITIZE" button and observe what happens.
- As in the previous instructions, an amount can still be entered into the text field (even though you cannot see it) to change the bead positions for the student to "subitize".
