HOW TO USE THIS APPLET
Definitions
- Shift-drag: Hold down the shift key, then drag the described object.
- Control-drag: Hold down the control key, then drag the described object.
- Control-shift-drag: Hold down both the control key and the shift key, then drag the described object.
THE CONTROLS AREA
- Select the r = u + v button to analyze vector addition (r is the resultant of adding u and v). Select either the u = r - v button or the v = r - u button to analyze vector subtraction.
- Dragging the terminal point of a vector may cause the "fixed" vector to change. You can manually change the "fixed" vector by selecting the:
- FIX u button or the FIX v button in "r = u + v" mode.
- FIX r button or the FIX v button in "u = r - v" mode.
- FIX r button or the FIX u button in "v = r - u" mode.
- Use the SET A VECTOR MAGNITUDE pop-up menu to change the magnitude of either of the two vectors being added or subtracted.
- Use the SET THE DIRECTION TYPE pop-up menu to set the direction type to "mathematical direction", "reference direction", "bearing" or direction relative to one of the two vectors being added or subtracted.
- Use the SET A VECTOR DIRECTION pop-up menu to change the direction of either of the two vectors being added or subtracted (in the direction type selected).
- Use the CENTER button to center the vector parallelogram in the graph area (when none of the vectors extend beyond the graph area).
- Use the RESET button to restore the applet to the initial state.
THE GRAPH AREA
- Drag the terminal point of any vector to change the magnitude and direction of the vector.
- Shift-drag the terminal point of any vector to change the magnitude of the vector.
- Control-drag the terminal point of any vector to change the direction of the vector.
- Drag inside the vector parallelogram diagram to translate all of the vectors.
- Drag outside the vector parallelogram diagram, towards or away from the common initial points to change the scale (size) of the vector diagram.
- Control-shift-drag inside the vector diagram to rotate all of the vectors.
OTHER
- Mouse-over the magnitude of a vector at the top of the screen to see that vector (and magnitude) in isolation.
- Mouse-over the direction of a vector at the top of the screen to see that vector (and direction) in isolation.
